Is racism a factor in the political opposition to President Obama?

I agree with letter writer Gail Householder about the intensity of opposition to the president, but unlike her and her friends, most of my white friends do believe there has been remarkable evidence of racism in the vitriolic attacks against President Obama (“No racism here, Mr. Pitts,” Aug. 11).
Anyone is entitled to agree or disagree with a political leader. But to deny there is racial hatred in this case is to deny the obvious. Mr. Pitts stated in his column why he reached this conclusion, and he actually provided supporting evidence, while your letter writer provides absolutely none to support calling Mr. Obama a “Marxist.”
An elderly, racist neighbor stopped me on the street more than a year ago to advise me that President Obama is a socialist, a fascist and a communist. It didn’t make any sense then and it doesn’t make any sense now.
We know that racism is not dead, and we know who the racists are. They have identified themselves over the years by their racist conversations and “jokes.”
Most people who grew up in that toxic environment have moved on. But there are still some people who seem stuck in the old ways. I fail to understand the “strong moral beliefs” claimed by your reader. Her letter really speaks for itself.

SALT LAKE CITY—A mixed-race woman who plans to marry a prisoner accused of killing a Utah corrections officer points to their pending nuptials as proof that he isn’t racist.
The fiancee of Curtis Allgier, 31, said the inmate whose face is covered with tattoos—including the prominent word “skinhead” broken up by a swastika on his forehead—is kinder and gentler than he is publicly portrayed.
“He’s a really kind-hearted, good person,” Erica Herrera told KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City.
Herrera, who lives near Sacramento, Calif., plans to marry Allgier in a ceremony at the Utah State Prison in Draper on Aug. 8. She said his white-supremacist ties don’t reflect his true beliefs.
“That’s obviously not what he is if he’s marrying someone that is of a different background than he is,” said Herrera, who is half Hawaiian and half Hispanic.
Allgier has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in the shooting death of prison guard Stephen Anderson.
Anderson, 50, was shot while escorting Allgier to a doctor’s appointment at a University of Utah medical facility on June 26, 2007. Authorities say Allgier had been unshackled before he took Anderson’s gun and shot him in the head.
After a high-speed chase, he was captured within hours at a fast food restaurant a few miles away.
If convicted, Allgier faces the death penalty.
His bride-to-be, who started communicating with Allgier before the 2007 shooting, said she believes he is innocent. If he is ever convicted, she would either divorce him or annul the marriage, she said.
The couple, who corresponded for years as friends before their relationship grew deeper, will exchange vows through a glass wall at the prison. The honeymoon will be abstinent, although Herrera said they are requesting a transfer to a state where conjugal visits are allowed.
